Machu Picchu

Overview

DESCRIPTION

Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas, rises majestically in the Peruvian Andes, revealing its archaeological splendor built in the 15th century under the reign of Pachacutec. Located 2,430 meters above sea level, the citadel impresses with its advanced architecture, including agricultural terraces, temples and plazas. Accessible via the emblematic Inca Trail, this historic site dazzles with outstanding structures such as the Temple of the Sun and the mysterious Intihuatana. From any point, panoramic views of mountain peaks and the Sacred Valley captivate visitors.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983 and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, Machu Picchu represents not only Inca architectural grandeur, but also a sanctuary that invites you to explore the history and unique connection of this civilization with nature, providing visitors with an unforgettable experience of time travel and culture.

Altitude

Machu Picchu is located at an altitude of approximately 2,430 meters (7,970 feet) above sea level. This Inca citadel is located high in the Peruvian Andes, in a strategic position that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain peaks and the Sacred Valley. Machu Picchu's altitude is moderate compared to some other areas in the Andes, making it easy for most tourists to visit. However, it is important to consider the altitude when planning your trip, especially if you are coming from sea level areas, as the altitude can affect some people and it is advisable to take time to acclimatize properly.

Weather

Machu Picchu exhibits a subtropical mountain climate characterized by variations in temperature and weather conditions throughout the year. Here is a detailed description of the seasons and the climate that prevails in this majestic Inca citadel:

Dry season (May to October)

During the dry season, from April to October, Machu Picchu enjoys more stable climatic conditions with a significant decrease in rainfall. Daytime temperatures are generally in the pleasant range of 18°C to 25°C (64°F - 77°F). This period is widely recognized as the high season for visiting Machu Picchu, thanks to the lower probability of rainfall and more predictable weather conditions that favor a more comfortable and uncluttered experience.

Rainy season (November to April)

In contrast, the rainy season, which runs from November through March, brings with it a noticeable increase in rainfall and wetter conditions. Daytime temperatures during this period can range from 12°C to 24°C (54°F - 75°F). Despite the increased likelihood of rain, Machu Picchu maintains its charm and mystery in the rain, creating a more lush and verdant landscape that adds a unique touch to the experience. This period, although less crowded, can be equally fascinating for those looking to enjoy the majesty of the citadel in a more serene and cooler environment.

It is important to wear comfortable clothing, a hat and sunscreen during the dry season in Machu Picchu (April to October), while in the rainy season (November to March) it is essential to wear waterproof layers and water-resistant footwear to fully enjoy the experience at this archaeological site.

History

Machu Picchu is an ancient Inca city located high in the Peruvian Andes, near the modern city of Cuzco. Its construction is attributed to the Inca emperor Pachacutec, who ruled between 1438 and 1472. Machu Picchu was built around 1450, during the height of the Inca Empire.

The city was abandoned and remained virtually unknown to the outside world until it was rediscovered by American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911. Bingham led an expedition funded by Yale University in search of the legendary city of Vilcabamba, the last known Inca capital, but instead found Machu Picchu.

Machu Picchu is known for its impressive architecture and spectacular location. It is built on terraced mountain slopes and offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. The city contains a number of well-preserved structures, including temples, palaces and dwellings, which reflect the architectural skill and urban planning of the Incas.

Although the exact purpose of Machu Picchu is unknown, it is believed to have served as a ceremonial center and possibly as a residence for the Inca elite. Its strategic location and the complexity of its construction have led to speculation about its role in the religion and daily life of the empire.

Machu Picchu has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. It attracts millions of visitors from around the world each year and remains an iconic symbol of the Inca civilization and Peru's rich history.

What to do in Machu Picchu?

Relaxing in the hot springs

Aguas Calientes gets its name from its thermal waters. This complex features 5 pools of sulfuric water (many mistake the water for being dirty due to its yellowish color, but it's sulfur that gives them their unique hue) with temperatures ranging from 38°C to 46°C.

The waters are natural, sourced directly from various volcanic origins, and possess numerous therapeutic properties. It's the perfect setting to relax after visiting Machu Picchu while waiting for the return train.

Important: At the location, you'll find lockers and showers for washing before entering the baths, but don't forget your sandals, towels, and robe as these are not provided.

Visit to Aguas Calientes Hot Springs:

  • Price: 20 soles
  • Hours: 5:00 AM – 8:00 PM
  • Address: Av. Pachacutec

Visit the Machu Picchu museum

The Manuel Chávez Ballón Museum offers two main exhibitions and a botanical garden:

  • Exhibition of Inca remains found in Machu Picchu and its surroundings, featuring around 250 objects such as ceramics, bronze and copper tools, bones, and other artifacts used in the city.

  • Exhibition of Inca artifacts used in construction, providing insights into how the citadel was built.

  • Botanical garden with over 200 species of orchids, many of them endemic to the region.

It's a very interesting visit, especially if you haven't hired a guide for your Machu Picchu visit.

Museum of Machu Picchu:

  • Address: Accessed via Avenida Hermanos Ayar, from Hiram Bingham Road (approximately a 30-minute walk).
  • Hours: 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
  • Admission: 22 soles.

Visit the butterfly farm

Located a 25-minute walk from Aguas Calientes, following the bus route towards Machu Picchu, you will find the Butterfly House, a butterfly breeding facility that houses an interesting collection of live butterflies in various stages of development.

The site is managed by volunteers and aims to protect the 300 species of butterflies found in the surrounding area.

Butterfly House in Aguas Calientes:

Address: To reach the Butterfly House, you need to walk to the municipal campground before the "Ruinasa Bridge" heading towards Machu Picchu.

Entrance Fee: 10 soles.

Visiting the Allcamayo waterfalls

The Allcamayo Waterfalls are a secluded and easily accessible spot from Aguas Calientes. Though it may be hard to believe in such a touristy destination, this site offers a walk among trees, orchids, butterflies, and birds that leads to three natural waterfalls, with the highest being Allcamayo at 30 meters tall.

It's a fantastic environment to discover and enjoy peacefully amidst nature. If you plan to swim, don't forget to bring a towel and swimsuit.

To get there, take the path behind the train station and walk about 40 minutes. You'll need to climb a wooden staircase and continue for a few minutes until you reach the cabin labeled "Catarata Allcamayo," where you can purchase the entrance ticket for 20 soles.

Opening hours: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Visit the handicraft market in Aguas Calientes.

The artisans' market in Aguas Calientes, located to the right of the train station, is a favorite destination for tourists. It offers a wide variety of handicrafts and goods such as alpaca clothing, paintings, wood and stone sculptures, musical instruments, masks, gold and silver jewelry, and more.

Many tourists choose to shop at the artisans' market after visiting Machu Picchu and before boarding the train back to Cusco. Being the final stop before entering the Inca city of Machu Picchu, prices here tend to be higher.

If you find something you really want, try to negotiate (ask for a lower price).

Visiting Putucusi Mountain

If you enjoy outdoor hikes, Putucusi Mountain is a favorite activity for adventurous individuals in Aguas Calientes.

This mountain stands at 2,560 meters (8,398 ft) above sea level.

The trail is one of the most challenging short hikes in Aguas Calientes, passing through an unmarked path and extremely steep vertical stairs. The trek takes approximately 2 hours.

Reaching the summit of this mountain offers stunning views of the Inca City of Machu Picchu from a lesser-known angle.

Ascending this mountain requires a good level of fitness. Wear hiking shoes and carry plenty of water with you.

Climbing Huayna Picchu

Facing the Machu Picchu citadel stands the towering Huayna Picchu (Young Mountain), often featured in many photographs of this Wonder of the World. Rising to 2,700 meters, there's a well-marked trail leading to its summit, offering an impressive view of the entire archaeological complex, the canyon, and the surrounding natural landscape.

Every day, many tourists climb this mountain before touring the citadel. It also features Incan archaeological remains such as terraces.

Due to high visitor interest and the challenge of reaching the summit for breathtaking views, there is a daily limit of 400 people allowed to access Huayna Picchu. Therefore, it's essential to secure your spot well in advance to ensure you don't miss this unique opportunity to experience Machu Picchu.

Inca Trail

Machu Picchu is so wonderful that there are alternatives to reach the site, and one of them is embarking on the great adventure of the Inca Trail, ideal for tourists who enjoy hiking and want to learn more about Inca culture. The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is considered one of the top 5 treks in the world and culminates in a dreamlike ending at the "Sun Gate," the ancient main entrance to Machu Picchu.

Along the route, besides enjoying the beautiful landscape and fantastic panoramic views, you will visit other archaeological sites such as Patallacta, Runquracay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca, and the "Sun Gate" or Intipunku, from where you have a spectacular view of the Inca citadel at sunrise.

Additionally, you can reach Machu Picchu by other hikes such as the famous Salkantay trek, the Choquequirao trek, or by engaging in adventure sports on the Inca Jungle route. All of these are amazing journeys with Machu Picchu as their final destination.

Entrance Tickets to Machu Picchu

in total there are 5 different types of Machu Picchu tickets. The most used by visitors is the 'Machupicchu Solo' ticket. People looking to add a dose of adrenaline to their trip can choose the 'Machupicchu + Huayna Picchu', 'Machupicchu + Mountain' or 'Machupicchu + Huchuy Picchu' tickets. Recently the 'Machupicchu + Inca Bridge' ticket was created, which includes the classic visit to the citadel as well as the famous Inca Bridge.

Travel Tips

What to take to Machu Picchu during the rainy season?

From November to March, Machu Picchu experiences its rainiest season. Although rains are typically intermittent, it's essential to be prepared with the following items for your trip:

  • Rain poncho or sturdy waterproof jacket.
  • Trekking shoes.
  • Waterproof and warm pants.
  • Preferably wear cotton sweaters and socks.
  • Always carry insect repellent and sunscreen.
  • Windbreaker jacket.
  • Gloves.
  • Plenty of water in canteens.

During this time, you may encounter cloudy conditions at Machu Picchu, which could affect visibility of the archaeological remains. It's advisable to purchase your tickets for Machu Picchu from midday onwards to increase your chances of good weather.

It's important to monitor the weather closely as you may still be able to see parts of the city, depending on whether the rain has stopped or is just beginning. Additionally, despite the rain, there will be sunny days when Machu Picchu looks green and colorful with flowers, and hotels, restaurants, and other tourist packages offer lower prices. Therefore, it's the best season to make the most of your visit to the Inca llaqta.

What to take to Machu Picchu in dry season?

During the dry season, from May to October, Machu Picchu experiences hot days and cold nights without rain. In June and July, frosts may occur during the night and early morning, so it's advisable to dress warmly.

If you're planning to visit the Inca citadel during these months, it's recommended to bring:

  • Hat and sunscreen.
  • Insect repellent.
  • Light clothing and a windbreaker jacket.
  • Sneakers.
  • Ample water and dried fruits.

If you wear shorts or skirts, protect yourself from mosquitoes, as they are prevalent in the warm weather.

Because the dry season attracts many tourists, especially during holidays, it's advisable to purchase tickets well in advance.

Cosas prohibidas en Machu Picchu

DO NOT forget your Machu Picchu ticket

will not allow you to enter Machu Picchu if you do not present a printed copy of your ticket. For this you must print your ticket before arriving at the entrance to Machu Picchu.

DO NOT access restricted areas

Some visitors to Machu Picchu have the mistaken idea of entering restricted areas, sometimes endangering the integrity of the Inca walls and structures. The Inca citadel of Machu Picchu is protected by high-definition security cameras. If park rangers catch you entering cordoned-off or prohibited areas, they will ask you to leave the site, which could spoil your experience, especially if you've traveled from the other side of the world.

DO NOT damage Inca walls

Although it goes without saying, there are still people who apparently do not understand the immense importance of the Inca City of Machu Picchu and dare to damage its walls; in case of doing something like this, not only will you be permanently expelled from Machu Picchu National Park, but you will also be prosecuted for damaging World Heritage areas.

DO NOT undress

In recent years, there have been cases where some visitors have undressed to take photos, seemingly as a joke. However, it's important to remember that Machu Picchu is a sacred place where nudity is not allowed. Depending on the seriousness of the situation, authorities may decide to permanently deny entry to the site.

DO NOT carry walking sticks

Unless you have a physical impairment or are elderly, you will not be allowed to enter Machu Picchu with a walking stick. It has been proven that the tips of walking sticks can damage and cause erosion on the ancient Inca trails, which are 500 years old. Therefore, if you need to use a walking stick at Machu Picchu, it must have a rubber tip to demonstrate its necessity.

DO NOT disturb the llamas

Llamas in Machu Picchu Sanctuary are not only protected animals but can also react unexpectedly to unwanted attention; avoid bothering them to prevent unpleasant surprises. Remember, annoyed llamas spit and may charge if they feel threatened.

Do not walk away from the marked trails.

In Machu Picchu, there are no significant risks, but Huayna Picchu is different. The trails to the top are steep and close to deep cliffs. Exploring Huayna Picchu on your own is dangerous. Follow the marked routes and the guide's directions. Children under 12 are not allowed to enter, but if you take them, you should be even more cautious due to their impulsive energy.

During this period, there are fewer clouds, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of the area and the overall experience to the fullest.

To enter Machu Picchu we have a variety of restrictions that we must abide by during the visit to the llaqta, in case of non-compliance will generate the immediate expulsion of the visitor without rights to reimbursement and start the corresponding legal actions.
